Cathead Distillery
Jackson, Mississippi
Mississippi's First Legal Distillery
Cathead Distillery, right off Jackson, Mississippi, is the state’s first legal speakeasy since the Great American Re-bake. Founded in 2010 by a band of blue-grass-baptised lads, it’s a small-batch boutique that throws a spadeful of vodka flavours, gin, and bourbon into the pot and watches the magic happen. 2020’s James Beard semi-finalist — so if you fancy a touch of class without the pretension — Cathead delivers.
They don’t just bottle spirits; they bottle culture. The walls double as a gallery for local artists, the walls double as a music venue, and the floor is littered with the occasional jigsaw puzzle for the families who can’t resist a good challenge before the first sip. The staff are honest, unpretentious, and actually know what the hell is going on inside their stills, so you get honest recommendations.
Expect a tasting, a souvenir glass (sometimes), and a small run of coveted whiskeys that will vanish faster than a decent car brand’s reputation.
