Crafting tradition, sipping innovation
1827 Spirits – Vidalia, Louisiana
This place is the first certified craft distillery in Concordia Parish in more than a hundred years, and it’s doing it with the same sort of pride you’d expect from a family that has been making spirits since before most of us were born.
Their line-up is the classic sort: moonshine, rye whisky, and a range of rums that would make an old-timer whisky bar blush. The star is Sandbar Duel – Louisiana molasses, brown sugar, double-distilled and charcoal-filtered until it’s as clean as the conscience of a saint. Seasonal Apple Pie Rum pops up as a sweet indulgence, while the Absinthe Verte, made in the old-school 1855 Portarlier style, is a testament to the distillery’s respect for French technique.
Their blueberry rum gives you a genuinely unique flavour profile that isn’t just another “artisan” gimmick, and the staff – knowledgeable, slightly grumpy, but unmistakably friendly – know their stuff. They’ve even carved out a small space for quirky events and tastings that won’t make your brain feel like it’s been over-stoked by a full-throttle tour of a Formula-One pit-crew.
In short, 1827 Spirits is the kind of place where tradition and innovation mash together like a well-mixed cocktail – minus the pretence.
